【 × 】:We have to change train at the next station.
【 ○ 】:We have to change trains at the next station.
【 × 】:Let's shake hand.
【 ○ 】:Let's shake hands.
【 × 】:All the peoples in this village have the same family name.
【 ○ 】:All the people in this village have the same family name.
【 × 】:Today we can gain various knowledges and informations through the Internet.
【 ○ 】:Today we can gain various items of knowledge and information through the Internet.
We took overseas students to Sky Tree.
→"Sky Tree"
冠詞(a, an, the)や前置詞(of, for, etc)、接続詞の"and"などは小文字のままにしておきます。
My grandpa collects old china.
【 × 】:The Statue of Liberty was a gift to The United States of America from the people of France.
【 ○ 】:The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States of America from the people of France.
→"the United States of America"は固有名詞、文頭ではないので"the"は小文字で始める
This kind of ship was called a destroyer and it guarded battleships or carriers.
This kind of ship was called a destroyer and she guarded battleships or carriers.
Japan is famous for its long tradition and high technology.
Japan is famous for her long tradition and high technology.
「通性」の"it"
My wife is three months pregnant and we hope it will be a boy this time.
【 × 】:"Who is that over there?" "He's John Thomas."
【 ○ 】:"Who is that over there?" "It's John Thomas."
【 × 】:"Who is this girl in this picture?" "She's my sister, Jane."
【 ○ 】:"Who is this girl in this picture?" "It's my sister, Jane."
Thomas borrowed his brother's car.
【例】:our dog's house(飼犬の家), penguin's food(ペンギンの餌)
【例】:our dogs' house(飼犬たちの家), penguins' food(ペンギンたちの餌)
【△】:James' dream, Thomas' novel, Paris' population
【○】:James's dream, Thomas's novel, Paris's population
【×】:childs' shoes, mans' hats, womans' lipstick
【○】:children's shoes, men's hats, women's lipstick
→"child"の複数形は"children"、"man"の複数形は"men"、"woman"の複数形は"women"
【例】:the president's arrival
Mark Twains' novles
【例】:suspect's arrest
【例】:girls' high schools
【例】:children's menu
《名詞》の所有格(名詞's)を使う表現で"a friend of my brohter's"があります。
one of my borther's friends"もほぼ同じ意味を表わします。
# a friend of my brother's = one of my brother's friends(数人いる兄さんの友人のうちの一人)
【×】:a my brother's friend
→「a/an + 名詞's + 名詞」
【○】:a friend of my brother's
→「a/an + 名詞 + of + 名詞's」
【○】:one of my brother's friends
→「one of + 名詞's + 名詞」
"a friend of my brother's"は所有格で終るのでやや奇妙に見えますが、"a friend of my brother's friends"の"friends"を省略した表現と考えられます。
"a my brother's friend"は不可
↑
「私の兄さんの友人うちの一人」は"a my brother's friend"ではなく"a friend of my brother's (= one of my brother's friends)"です。
同様に、人称代名詞の所有格(my, her, etc)の前に定冠詞(the)や指示形容詞(this, these, that, those)、不定代名詞(some, any, etc)などを置くのは文法的に不可。
【×】:the my brother's friends
【○】:the friend of my brother's
→"the my brother's"の語順は文法的に不可、"of my brother's"を使う
【×】:this my brother's friends, that my brother's friends
【○】:this friend of my brother's, that friend of my brother's
→"this/that my brother's"の語順は文法的に不可、"of my brother's"を使う
【×】:these my brother's friends, those my brother's friends
【○】:these friends of my brother's, those friends of my brother's
→"these/those my brother's"の語順は文法的に不可、"of my brother's"を使う
【×】:some my brother's friends, any my brother's friends
【○】:some friends of my brother's, any friends of my brother's
(= some of my brother's friends, any of my brother's friends)
→"some/any my brother's"の語順は文法的に不可、"of my brother's"を使う
"the friend of my brother's"や"some friends of my brother's"は所有格で終るのでやや奇妙に見えますが、"the friend of my brother's friends"や"some friends of my brother's friends"の"friends"を省略した表現と考えられます。
I stayed at my brother's yesterday.
(= I stayed at my brother's house yesterday.)
I bought these donuts at Kirk's.
(= I bought these donuts at Kirk's shop.)
We're going to St Paul's.
(= We're going to St Paul's Cathedral.)
【例】:my friend's address = the address of my friend(私の友人の住所)
# 「of 〜」 → 無生物の所有を表わす【例】:the name of the dish(その料理の名前)

【△】:the chopsticks of children, hats of men, the nest of a bird
【○】:children's chopsticks, men's hat, bird's nest
【○】:the parking lot of a company, the capital of Japan, actitities of the UN
【○】:company's parking lot, Japan's capital, the UN's activities
【△】:car's speed, nature's destruction, dam's water level
【○】:the speed of a car, the destruction of nature, the water level of the dam
【○】:my sister's son
【○】:the son of my sister
【×】:my sister's who lives in the UK son
【○】:the son of my sister who lives in the UK
→"my sister who lives in the UK"長いので"of 〜"を使う
【○】:all the people's average income
【○】:the average income of all the people
【×】:all the people's living in this country average income
【○】:average income of all the people living in this country
→"all the people living in the country"は長いので"of 〜"を使う
【○】:tomorrow's weather, last night's fire, yesterday's game
【○】:the weather of tomorrow, the fire of last night, the game of yesterday

I want to eat a sandwich." I want to eat sandwiches."です。
"I want to eat sandwich."
I want to eat bread."です。"I want to eat a bread." I want to eat breads."
【×】:In my experiences, dogs are more faithful than cats.
【○】:In my experience, dogs are more faithful than cats.
【×】:A voluteer activity in the disaster area is experience I'll never forget.
【○】:A voluteer activity in the disaster area is an experience I'll never forget.
I've caught a cold.
Washing hands can prevent colds and flu.

"a box of 〜"などを使う
たとえば、"a bunch of flowers"(一束の花束)や"two boxes of matches"(二箱分のマッチ)など。
【×】:a box of tomato, ten boxes of tomato
【○】:a box of tomatoes, ten boxes of tomatoes
【×】:a few schools of dolphin, many schools of dolphin
【○】:a few schools of dolphins, many schools of dolphins
"a piece of 〜"などを使う
"book"(本)や"apple"(リンゴ)などの「数えられる名詞」は、"one book, two books, three books"、あるいは、"one apple, two apples, three apples"と数えることができます。"
water"をコップに入れると"a glass of water"、一滴だけなら"a drop of water"です。
【例】:a glass of water, two glasses of water, a hundred glasses of water
【例】:a few glasses of water, many glasses of water

【例】:rat(単数)→rats(複数)[ネズミ]
【例】:box(単数)→boxes(複数)[箱]
【例】:oasis(単数)→oases(複数)[オアシス]
【例】:child(単数)→children(複数)[子供]
【例】:foot(単数)→feet(複数)[足]
【例】:cat(単数) → cats(複数)[猫]
【例】:mountain(単数) → mountains(複数)[山]

【例】:ox(単数) → oxen(複数)[雄牛]
【例】:tooth(単数) → teeth(複数)[歯]

die, dice(さいころ) | dies | dice |
penny(ペニー) | pennys | pennies, pence |
